Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine United Centers for Advanced Research and Translational Medicine (ART)
Director Toshio Miyata

This center was originally founded in April 1, 2002 at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine as the Center for Translational and Advanced Animal Research (CTAAR). Its establishment as an educational and research institution was initially designed to advance post-genomic research with particular emphasis on the elucidation of genome (gene) functions in experimental animals. As times change, however, post-genomic research now calls for greater attention on the study of proteins (structure and function), antibodies, and low molecular weight compounds. In addition, it is clear that the focus of future initiatives should be placed on the rapid translation of basic research outputs into clinically relevant applications, i.e., the translational medical research. Fortunately, the Innovation of New Biomedical Engineering Center (known as the Translation Research Center, TRC) was already established as a bridging platform on the Tohoku University Seiryo Campus, and our center is expected to play a very active role in promoting the synthesis of research outputs into clinical applications in close collaboration with TRC. In view of these developments, our center has been officially reorganized on April 1, 2010, as the United Centers for Advanced Research and Translational Medicine (known as ART) to better serve our future missions.
The renewed ART is committed to the following principles.
